Hair loss is a common concern among individuals undergoing rapid weight loss, as observed in my patients and even in my own personal experience. The phenomenon of thinning hair often accompanies significant weight reduction, leading to understandable distress amid the physical transformations and emotional vulnerabilities associated with body image.
Despite the common perception that Semaglutide and Tirzepatide medication may cause thinning hair, it is essential to recognize that this side effect is typically linked to the process of shedding pounds rapidly. This type of hair loss is termed telogen effluvium, a temporary condition triggered by swift weight loss, often induced by stringent dieting practices or nutritional deficiencies.
When considering the prescription of Semaglutide or Tirzepatide, it is crucial to view these medications as an aid in fostering improved dietary habits, which should center around consuming nutrient-rich foods, while emphasizing the significance of maintaining a balanced diet.
While the medication can curb your appetite for unhealthy food choices, sustainable and healthy weight loss hinges on more than just its effects, it offers an opportunity to integrate fresh and wholesome foods into your daily meals.
IT'S ALL IN THE NUTRIENTS
Although rapid weight loss may occasionally lead to temporary hair thinning, focusing on nutritious food selections can help alleviate or mitigate this effect while working towards achieving a healthier weight. We recommend at least 64 grams of protein daily.
Prioritize a diverse range of nutrient-dense fresh foods in your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. The health of your hair is intricately linked to the quality of nutrients you provide your body.
Scalp Care
What goes on your scalp can also help to stimulate hair growth and overall scalp health. Like most other people, I love a little self-care moment. I found a wonderful place in Boston, SKA Scalp, where they treat and massage your scalp as well as use light therapy. I highly recommend checking them out.
Here is a simple scalp treatment to mix up before hair wash day.
The ingredients are simple: mix a small amount of organic, cold pressed castor oil, argan oil, and coconut oil into a small bowl or jar. Add a drop or two of rosemary essential oil and mix well until combined. You may need to warm the mixture slightly for the coconut oil to liquify, but it helps to thin out the thicker oils so that they are easier to apply.
You can apply the mixture with your hands, or use a small brush that hairstylists use to apply hair dye to really get down to the scalp. Try to avoid the ends of your hair, keeping the oils on your scalp to avoid oily, weighed down hair.
Some people like to wrap their hair up with plastic wrap or a plastic shower cap to generate some heat and really let the oils sink in. All of these ingredients are thought to promote hair growth and hair strength. They are also great for the skin, moisturizing the scalp and reducing any flaky, dry skin that can exacerbate hair loss.
Leave this mixture on for at least 30 minutes- or longer if you get caught up bingeing your favorite reality show on the couch. Bonus points if you light a candle and drink a cup of tea, just for the self-care of it all! You may find you need to shampoo twice to get all of the oil out.
PRF is also a great treatment to stimulate hair growth and results are seen with one treatment although great results happen with three to six treatments one month apart. We are currently offering Summer Savings: 3 PRF Treatments for $1500
